What does this painting make you remember—or almost smell?

This may be my favorite painting I’ve ever made.

It feels like France to me. Pink, peach, and orange. Cafés. Warmth. Texture. Jazz. Language. Art. Rain. Bread.

We’ve spent many weeks all around France, with our final month in the 11th in Paris. I love the aesthetic of Paris, the zinc Haussmann with flowers spilling out over the Juliette balconies. But also the entire experience of being surrounded by a culture with such a long relationship to art, food, and beauty.

I even took a baguette-baking class while we were there, and somehow, when I look at this painting, I feel like I can smell the bread baking.

There are pieces of Spain and Italy in it too, because memories don’t always stay neatly inside borders. But this one, for me, is France.

Baguette Days installed at Art Gym Denver.
